The portrait of a peasant girl wearing a bonnet reveals Jawlensky's engagement with the painting of Paul Cézanne, to whom a highly acclaimed retrospective was dedicated in Paris in 1907, which Jawlensky visited. The lightened palette displays an astonishing richness of nuance. Particularly striking are the contrasting brushstrokes that regularly structure the entire picture surface, lending the whole work stability and permanence. This austere pictorial conception emphasizes the somewhat reserved expression of the girl, who is depicted frontally.
