Exhibition catalog for the exhibition Pairings at the Kunstmuseum Basel from August 17, 2024, to July 27, 2025.

Dating of excellent works of art - next to, opposite or with each other. What makes couples? When pictures meet, they communicate. The result is unusual dialogs and harmonious duets, even across different eras and genres. Kiki de Montparnasse & Boris Mikhailov. Paul Cezanne & Mireille Gros.

Correspondences and similarities or differences and contrasts? What is in the foreground when different styles are united in color? Sculpture and painting use the same motifs? Western and Eastern art meet? Works of art rub against each other and harmonize. Together, they tell a different story than they do on their own, as we humans also do. Look, see anew, experience excitement - an original round dance unfolds between the protagonists of this lavishly illustrated book.

With a grand opening exhibition, the Kunstmuseum Basel is celebrating the arrival of an important private collection that originated in Basel: The Im Obersteg Collection, which has grown continuously since 1916. Doris Im Obersteg-Lerch, the widow of Jürg Im Obersteg, is entrusting one of our country's most important collections of Classical Modernism to her hometown. For the Kunstmuseum Basel this permanent loan comprises a rich augmentation. World-famous masterpieces such as Marc Chagall's three Rabbis, Pablo Picasso's Buveuse d'absinthe - a main work of the Blue Period - ideally supplement the museum's own collection. An unique group of 30 works by Alexej von Jawlensky and an ensemble of paintings by Chaïm Soutine set new accents in Basel. Names such as Cézanne, Kandinsky, Klee, Modigliani, Nolde, Rodin, Rouault, Soutter, Tàpies and others speak for the breadth and importance of this art treasure.

The collction's entire catalogue has been revised. All works are reproduced in color. The book is comprised of several essays, the history of the collection, and an essay on the collectors: the authors are Doris Im Obersteg-Lerch, Hans Furer, Henriette Mentha, Ingrid Koszinowski, Andreas Meier, Hartwig Fischer, Annette Weber, Stephan Berg and others.

You will find further catalogues on the Im Obersteg Collection in the archive.
