Alexej von Jawlensky - Mystical Head: Head of a Girl (Frontal)

After moving to Zurich in 1917, Jawlensky returned to the motif of the human head, which had already preoccupied him in Munich before the war. His renewed interest in the face went hand in hand with his conviction that great art was impossible in the absence of religious feeling, which in turn could only be conveyed in the form of the human face. The Mystical Heads series applies the creative vocabulary Jawlensky had developed in the earlier Variations to the depiction of stylized female heads with expressive almond-shaped eyes.
