Jean-Paul Riopelle’s abstract art is recognizably influenced by Jackson Pollock’s action painting. Leaving his native Canada for Paris in the late 1940s, he brought this unrestrained style in painting from the New World to Europe. Unlike Pollock’s art, however, Riopelle’s work is dominated by thick impasto. The expressive effect of the paint he applied to the canvas in dense bands and splotches—the palette knife was his preferred tool—is heightened by the purely abstract compositions.
