Marc Chagall - Jew in Green

The model for the painting was an old beggar and Hasidic wandering Rabbi called the “Sluzker Maggid” or preacher from Sluzk. In contrast to his Paris paintings in which he tackled Jewish themes from memory and in an almost dreamlike manner, Chagall called the works that he produced in Vitebsk from reality: “documents”. The beggar fills the canvas almost to its borders. It is a picture of poverty and mute humility; the upper body is shown dressed in a baggy kaftan mended with patches. The overlarge head weighs heavily on the old man’s shoulders. The green, deeply furrowed countenance is encircled by a yellow beard and yellow curls. The irreal coloration lends him the aura of a presence sunk in meditation. The enigmatically two-toned hands underline the spiritual dimension, while the shabby Russian cap and the faded jacket brings the figure back again to the everyday misery of the present. At the same time the pious Jew is also a tired old man who has one eye open, the other closed at the moment of falling asleep, when he was painted by Chagall. The text in Hebrew that serves as a backdrop to the figure points to the spirituality at work here and the mission of the “preacher of Sluzk” who, as a wandering preacher, seems to be reciting religious scripts while half asleep. The text includes, among others, words from a Kaddish prayer to be recited daily: “He who makes peace in His heaven, may he make peace for us and for all Israel.” This wish for peace is linked to the hope for the end of the war, whose outbreak had caught Chagall in Vitebsk and forced him to an involuntary 8-year stay in Russia.

Provenance
