The painting Der Jude in Rot shows a bearded man with a crooked cane and a begging bag against the bright blue façade of a house. The imposing figure, who bursts the bounds of the frame, is easy to associate with the literary figure of the eternally wandering Jew Ahasuerus, symbol of the homeless folk of Israel. The man appears from time to time in Chagall’s work with his begging bag, such as an “airborne man” who floats above the roofs of the schtetl, in the painting Over Vitebsk from 1914, which also had once belonged to the Im Obersteg Collection. Der Jude in Rot takes its name from the deep carmine red of his right hand and a large part of the background. Similar to a curtain, a white triangle is drawn across the red ground and forms the light ground for a list of artists’ name from art history. While the band of script in Der Jude in Grün manifests Chagall’s religiosity, the inscriptions in Der Jude in Rot relate to the painter’s artistic background. All of the artists in the list are innovators, at whose side Chagall very self-assuredly places himself. Against this artistic and richly colored backdrop – where the faceted color planes are additionally reminiscent of Robert Delaunay’s Orphism – the clear, dark outlines of the powerful figure of the Jew rise up, who, as a stand-in for the artist, has set off on a long journey.
