The interlocking color-shapes in black, white, red, and yellow of Composition make for a pictorial structure that is arguably characteristic of Poliakoff’s work from the late 1940s onward. In 1937, Poliakoff embraced nonrepresentational art. Eschewing the line as a compositional means then paved the way for his mature style, which is evident in his work from 1949 onward. Form, color, physical matter, and light are now all he needs to define his pictorial spaces.
