Wassily Kandinsky - Study for Murnau - Landscape with Church

The silhouette of the Murnau parish church of St. Nikolaus with its characteristic late Baroque tower can be found in many of Kandinsky’s works from 1909 and 1910. While going through the process of abstraction in the years 1910/11, during the course of which the artist found his way to non-representational painting, Kandinsky converted the motif into a purely pictorial code. Studie zu Murnau – Landschaft mit Kirche I documents an early phase of this process in which the forms of the objects were reduced to clearly outlined color fields. The work is a study for the oil painting Murnau – Landschaft mit Kirche I, approximately double in size, which diverged only slightly in composition and form from this preliminary draft. It draws its intense presence from the dynamic relationship between polar formal elements: in the upper half of the picture a kind of energy field arises, made up of the confluence of red and orange hues with complementary cold blue and green hues, as well as yellow. Its expressive intensity is accentuated by the diagonal movement of clouds passing towards the upper right.
